Porter Elementary in Mesquite Tops MexTour Reading Challenge

The students of Porter Elementary in Mesquite celebrated reading more than one million minutes in the MexTour Reading Challenge today with a special reading celebration at the school.

Dallas Cowboys legend Everson Walls and FC Dallas player John Nelson participated in the celebration as they each read a book to the students.  Mascots Rowdy from the Dallas Cowboys, Tex Hooper from FC Dallas, and Kin from the Mexican National Team were also at the celebration.

"For this first year of the MexTour partnership, we initiated a reading program for elementary school students to promote bilingual literacy and want to congratulate all the students that participated," said Monica Paul, Executive Director of the Dallas Sports Commission.  "This is an important element in engaging our community as the Mexican National Team calls Dallas its home-away-from-home for the next four years."

Reading Challenge Background

The goal of this challenge is to promote bilingual literacy for students in the greater Dallas region. Year one districts include Mesquite, Dallas, Arlington, and Frisco ISD's.  The competition ran from April 8th – May 10th and school districts introduced the competition to the grades/programs they saw fit for year one. Grades and competitions could include any of the following:

  • All K-5th students
  • All students in an individual grade
  • ESL students K-5th

Students, teachers or parents recorded the number of minutes the student read, in either Spanish or English, each day onto their reading log sheet. At the end of each week, teachers submitted their student's minutes to their district reading challenge coordinator. Each week, the top 10 readers received a prize. The Dallas Sports Commission sent prizes for each round to the district coordinator for them to distribute within their district.
